Fare Plastic-free in azienda ai tempi del Covid-19 – Facciamo chiarezza

Mascherine e guanti monouso, distributori di disinfettante all’ingresso, imballaggi usa e getta in plastica non solo per i cibi da asporto ma anche all’interno dei locali per evitare bicchieri, posate e piatti da lavare. Sono tempi duri per il Plastic-free. Poco importa se con la lavastoviglie, come fa notare qualche ristoratore che teme gli effetti del panico, si assicura l’igiene per i clienti. Ma si può continuare ad essere Plastic-free pur dovendo per Legge assicurare standard igienico-sanitari che preservino la salute delle persone? La risposta è sì.

È chiara la insostituibilità dei presidi medici, ma non è questa l’obiettivo del Plastic-free e nemmeno della Direttiva europea sulla plastica monouso che dal 2021 vieta determinati oggetti. Dov’è che invece la plastica è da sostituire o eliminare è dove il suo utilizzo monouso è dannoso e sono presenti alternative sostenibili. A ciò si aggiunge ora più che mai l’ulteriore esigenza del rispetto di standard igienico-sanitari che inibiscano la trasmissione del virus.

Il virus dell’inquinamento

A fine marzo la Onlus Plastic Free ha documentato, fotografando, guanti e mascherine gettati a terra fuori dalle attività commerciali, sui marciapiedi, dietro automobili parcheggiate. Gettare guanti e mascherine non solo inquina ma può potrebbe contribuire alla diffusione della pandemia perchè il virus sopravvive anche alcuni giorni sulla plastica. “Secondo alcuni ricercatori statunitensi – spiega Luca De Gaetano, Presidente dell’associazione – il virus sulla plastica può sopravvivere fino a tre giorni. Una tesi confermata da alcuni virologi che hanno specificato che per un completo azzeramento dell’infettività sulla plastica ci vogliono fino a 72 ore.” (…) Un comportamento del genere mette a rischio le persone, soprattutto gli operatori ecologici.

Nel frattempo le norme igieniche imposte in previsione di una fase 2 per fronteggiare l’emergenza epidemiologica – sottolinea la vice-Presidente di Plastic Free, Rosa Reale – portano all’uso spasmodico della plastica usa e getta. “Ci arrivano continuamente segnalazioni di abbandoni per strada e nelle vicinanze di alcuni supermercati di guanti e di mascherine chirurgiche monouso.”

Inoltre ci sono regole per lo smaltimento di questi oggetti, che vanno gettati tutti, a prescindere dal tipo di materiale, all’interno dell’indifferenziata per essere poi destinati agli inceneritori. Nelle ultime settimane si è avuto un aumento esponenziale dei rifiuti non solo ospedalieri ma della frazione indifferenziata. Ciò sta mettendo a dura prova il nostro sistema di smaltimento caratterizzato da una carenza di impianti già ben prima dell’emergenza.

 

L’appello per una Fase 2 Plastic-free

Oggi ristorazione e strutture ricettive sono giustamente focalizzate su come proteggere i clienti. Ma quando passa il Coronavirus l’inquinamento da plastica continuerà a rappresentare un enorme problema ambientale.

È del 30 aprile l’appello di Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, presidente della Fondazione Univerde ed ex-Ministro dell’Ambiente, che chiede al Governo di permettere che la ripartenza sia Plastic-free. Pecoraro Scanio chiede che la fase 2 avvenga evitando che la “ripresa delle attività diventi il festival del monouso, di mascherine usa e getta, di guanti usa e getta, di una serie di imballaggi obbligatori per impacchettare nella plastica qualunque cosa. Dopo che abbiamo approvato Norme e realizzato iniziative molto importanti per superare l’uso di queste plastiche.”

“Ecco perché – continua l’ex-Ministro – occorre che il Governo e tutte le istituzioni diano informazioni chiare. Vanno favorite per esempio le mascherine riutilizzabili, rilavabili, tra l’altro in molti casi prodotte veramente Made in Italy e con grande qualità di sicurezza rispetto all’usa e getta. (…) Quindi facciamo in modo che una ripartenza sia seria, che le indicazioni siano date in modo chiaro e che si usino tutte le procedure di sostenibilità e tutti i prodotti riutilizzabili e riciclabili. Quello che chiede una sana economia circolare per cui si è impegnata l’Europa e il Governo italiano.”

 

I riutilizzabili sono sicuri?

Il monouso è ora visto come una soluzione preferibile perché viene probabilmente accostato alla natura dei presidi medici che dopo il loro utilizzo vengono gettati. Gli articoli monouso sono personali e solitamente non hanno un contatto con altri oggetti o persone durante l’utilizzo. In questo modo la trasmissione di qualsiasi tipo di elemento dovrebbe essere evitato.

Ma gli articoli monouso non sono più sicuri rispetto ai riutilizzabili lavati correttamente. Gli oggetti monouso sono soggetti a qualsiasi agente patogeno che si è depositato su di essi.

Gli articoli riutilizzabili sono sicuri. Detergenti e acqua calda sono efficaci nell’uccidere il Covid-19, altri virus e batteri. Le lavastoviglie sono più efficaci del lavaggio a mano grazie all’uso di alte temperature e del lavaggio prolungato. Il Covid-19 pare sia particolarmente sensibile ai detergenti e al calore ed è dimostrato che il lavaggio in lavastoviglie uccida tutti i patogeni.

La crisi del Coronavirus ci sta mostrando che non siamo dotati dei sistemi di cui abbiamo bisogno per riutilizzare gli oggetti in un ambito extra-domestico commerciale. Per questo motivo è probabile che ci sarà un’esplosione di consumo di prodotti monouso tra i ristoranti che effettuano consegne a domicilio ma non solo. Il Covid-19 cambierà molte cose nella nostra vita per un certo periodo ma non cambierà i valori fondamentali come il lavorare per un’economia sostenibile.

Mascherine e guanti riutilizzabili stanno venendo prodotti da marchi della moda, diventando accessori di tendenza ma rispettando anche alti standard di sicurezza. I dispenser di igienizzante ricaricabili, come quelli presenti negli ospedali, vengono toccati da mani diverse in continuazione ma come d’altronde avviene anche per quelli usa e getta che quindi non hanno nessuna ragione igienica per essere preferiti.

Si può continuare ad usare la borraccia riutilizzabile e la tazza di caffè personali. Le migliori opzioni di ricarica dell’acqua sono gli erogatori muniti di sensore. Se non si ha un facile accesso ad uno di essi, è possibile utilizzare il rubinetto senza lasciare che la borraccia tocchi direttamente il rubinetto, e lavandosi le mani dopo aver toccato superfici comuni. Inoltre non dimenticare di lavare la bottiglia o la tazza con acqua e detergente preferibilmente in lavastoviglie.
